CHAPTER 6: ENCOURAGE INITIATIVE TO DEVELOP LEADERS

Challenge

 

Real performance comes from the dynamic vigor of the business, which rests on the initiative of each employee, aligned to solving the larger challenges of the company.

 

The true aim of a lean learning system is to encourage suggestions from every employee. suggestions have to be cultivated carefully. The first challenge is to make sure people understand the core problems you are trying to solve, which requires making sure that processes are visualized so that abnormalities can be detected by everyone and new ideas come to mind in the course of daily work.

 

Then, the flow of ideas must be encouraged and sustained by following up on every suggestion whilst protecting the ownership of the person who's had the idea. This can be done by following the suggestion in terms of supporting the person to:

  1. test it in a quick and dirty way without investment
  2. convince others that the after is better than before
  3. going all the way to including the new way in the daily standards

And drawing the management lessons: what do we need to change at management level to sustain the new way of working.
